Photo. Full length, sepia-toned, oval portrait of James Battle, chief of the Detroit Fire Department in 1870 (as identified on verso). Battle is posing in a "chief" sash, and next to a "chief engineer" helmet, and horn. Battle was noted for being first paid chief of the department after its formation in 1865. Photo is printed on cardstock.
