Uniform, Organizational

One woman's YWCA uniform worn during World War I, aproximate size 20. The uniform consists of the following pieces which are described as follows:

a. One jacket made of blue/gray wool flannel fabric. It has a collar and notched lapels, long sleeves without cuffs and with a decorative scalloped patch at the seam, large side pockets with button flaps, an attached 1.75-inch wide matching fabric belt with a 2-button closure, four buttons down the center front, and a center back pleat with vent opening at the bottom. All of the jacket buttons are made of made of medium brown plastic and have a smooth finish on the front. The jacket interior has a lining on the upper half and a label on the inside back left shoulder that reads "By Appointment, H. J. Nicoll & Co., Ltd., 29-31 Rue Tronchet, Paris." The left sleeve has a patch at the shoulder that shows a black letter, "A," with a small orange diamond beneath it. The right sleeve has a patch at the shoulder that consists of an inverted black triangle with a white inner border and white lettering that shows "YWCA." A small brass pin consisting of a torch with crossed flags is attached to the left lapel.

b. One skirt made of blue/gray wool flannel fabric. It has a plain front with six snaps at the center top and a 2-inch wide waistband with two snaps for closure, side pockets with button flaps, and four partially-stitched pleats at the back. Buttons on the pocket flaps are identical to the jacket buttons.

c. One overseas cap made of blue-gray wool flannel fabric. (garrison cap style) There is a brass pin at front center that is "YWCA" on black enamel strip across blue enamel triangle. There is a brass corps insignia on front left which is a torch and two crossed flags.

d. One uniform hat made of black brushed felt. The cavalry style hat has a wide (2.75" w) stiff brim, a creased flat top, 2-inch wide black silk ribbon headband, and a black/white YWCA inverted triangle patch at the front. The interior has a black rayon/acetate lining.

e. One blue rayon knit necktie with square ends (41 inches in length). The tie width is narrower at the neck.

f. One white cotton blouse with blue stripes. It has no collar, French cuffs, and a label that reads "A. Sulka & Co., 512 Fifth Avenue, N.Y.," and "6 Rue Castiglione, Paris."

g. One white cotton oxford cloth blouse with blue stripes. It has no collar and French cuffs.
