Came to Detroit with his brother Christian Henry Buhl in 1833.

At the age of sixteen Frederick left for Pittsburgh to learn the jewler's trade.

Was in the fur and hat business with his brother, Christian Buhl (who also served as mayor of Detroit).

After his brother's retirement, he joined in partnership with Henry Newland, another merchant and soon after Newland withdrew from their business to form his own company. Buhl entered into partnership with his sons. Their company became the largest shippers of furs in the country
