1858 campaigned against Douglas for Senate: held debates with him on issue of slavery; was defeated but gained confidence of republican north
1860 campaigned against Douglas for presidency; elected
April 12, 1861 - issued call for 75,000 men when rebels fired on Fort Sumpter on this date.
Sept. 22, 1862 - issued Emancipation Proclamation
April 14, 1865 - shot in back of the head at Ford's Theatre by John Wilkes Booth, died at 7:22 A.M. on April 15, 1865.
