Enlisted in 23rd Red. Ohio Volunteers in Civil War; became brevet major in 1865; later served on staff of Rutherford B. Hayes
1867- admitted to Ohio bar; began practice in Canton, OH
1876-1883 - elected to Congress
1885-1890 - elected to Congress; became Speaker of the House
1891 and 1893- elected Governor of Ohio
1896- defeated William J. Bryan to become 25th President of the United States
Persuaded Congress to pass a high tariff act
Passed Gold Standard Act in 1900
April 11, 1898- delivered war message to Congress against Spain; war resulted in Spain's ceding Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines to the U.S. and abandoning her rule in Cuba.
1898- pressed for annexation of Hawaii, which Congress passed
1900- again defeated William J. Bryan
Called for an "Open Door" policy of trade with China
September 6, 1901- shot by an anarchist name Leon Czolgosz at Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY.
Third president to be killed by an assassin.

Attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. (had to discontinue studies because of illness; then taught school)
