One sepia-toned photograph of the entertainer chimpanzee, Joe Mendi II, at the Detroit Common Council. Detroit City Councilman, Richard Lindsay, is seated at the far left with Councilman, Eugene Van Antwerp, seated at the far right. The man with the eye patch who is standing in the background may be Detroit Zoo Director, John T. Millen. The chimpanzee was purchased for the Detroit Zoo by the Zoo Director in 1932. "Joe Mendi" was a popular attraction at the Zoo and he lived there until his death on September 8, 1934. Embossed text in the lower right corner of the photo shows "The Detroit News, Detroit, Mich."
