Detroit City Councilman, Richard Lindsay, is seated at the left and Joe Mendi is playing with the Council gavel. A typewritten label in the lower left corner shows Dick Lindsay, Councilman, allows 'Joe Mendi' to call meeting to order when Joe came in to invite Councilman to Zoo." (The chimpanzee was purchased for the Detroit Zoo by the Zoo Director in 1932. "Joe Mendi" was a popular attraction at the Zoo and lived there until his death on September 8, 1934.)
