He has dark-colored, long wavy hair, and is wearing a dark suit coat and vest, a white shirt with an upright collar, and a dark-colored narrow bow tie. Handwritten black ink text on the verso reads "James H. Donaldson, about 1875."
(Note: The subject's long hairstyle and lack of facial hair suggests that he was in his late teens or early twenties. This would tend to date the photo to about 1865 rather than 1875. Later photos all show him with a moustache and/or beard.)
