Letter
Michigan Military Academy
One letter, dated January 12, 1890, from McKinstry Burt of the Michigan Military Academy to his parents. The letter is handwritten in black ink on a sheet of slightly yellowed letterhead stationery from the Michigan Military Academy in Orchard Lake, Michigan. The text is transcribed as follows:
"Dear Papa and Mama,
I arrived here all right last Monday night, and have not had the grip [grippe]. Some of the boys out here have the grip. When I was going down in the car to the train, one of the firemen of the No. 6 Hook and L. [Ladder] said that they were going to pave Concord Ave. next spring. It rained this morning, if it had not we would have S.M.I. [Sunday morning inspection] on the parade ground.
I suppose Mama took those proofs down to Tomlinsons and ordered the pictures. I paid $1.00 on the pictures. The food has not been very good so far since we have been back. I suppose you and Mama are over your bad colds by this time. Have you got rid of Bertha yet. Tiernan was the cadet that came up to see me while I was at church last Sunday. Tiernan says that our girl does not know much. The new academic building is not finished yet. I can not think of anything more. So goodby from your affectionate son,
McKinstry Burt."
An additional short note on the verso is transcribed as follows:
"Please send me card with accounts on while home. It is on the marble mantle piece in sitting room in dancing programme.
M.B."
