Letter

Michigan Military Academy

One letter, dated May 5, 1890, from McKinstry Burt of the Michigan Military Academy to his parents. The letter is handwritten in black ink on a sheet of slightly yellowed letterhead stationery from the Michigan Military Academy in Orchard Lake, Michigan. The text is transcribed as follows:

"Dear Mama and Papa:
Yours of the 20th inst. rec'd. all right. I rec'd an invitation to Waters wedding last week, he is going to be married the 4th of June. Waters is my old room-mate, and lives at Grand Rapids. the cavalry squad went riding yesterday afternoon, we were out in all that rain, and got soaking wet, but put clean clothes on when we came back and I did not take to cold. The lightening [lightning] struck two trees in the area yesterday. I do not know whether I will be able to stay over or not. How are you getting along repairing the furnace? The sun is trying to come out, but has not succeeded very well so far. I should not think that Hiram or the girls would like to have a boy tagging around after them in Europe. I am heartily sick of this place and wish I was home so I can get some fruit.
I am pretty well, and hope you are. From your affectionate son,
McKinstry Burt."
