Cover

China Hot Dish Cover. Blue on white image of the "Thomas Viaduct, 1835," as identified by a banner, adorns the top. In addition to the titular viaduct, this landscape includes the surrounding woods, train tracks leading to the bridge, and several structures in the distance. A hole, presumably intended as a vent or handle disrupts the center of the design. This image is circumscribed by a leaf and floral band with a line and triangle motif along its outer edge. A larger version of this leaf and floral pattern composes the band which encircles the upper portion of the cover's side. A second band containing transportation scenes of predominantly early train engines is below. The first panel commemorates the "First stone of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad laid July 4, 1828." Continuing counterclockwise from this are a "Horse Drawn Car, 1830," "the 'Tom Thumb,' 1830," "the 'Atlantic,' 1832," "the 'Philip E. Thomas,' 1838," "'Winan's Camel,' 1851," and "Mogul '600' 1875."

A maker's mark depicting a two-tiered dome adorned with a column at its peak is located on the inside of the lid. The dome is flanked with the dates 1827 and 1927. The text surrounding and below reads, "Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Scammell's, Lamberton China, Design Patented."

This collection of blue and white china was used in the dining cars of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad during the 100th anniversary of the founding of the line. The china is styled in the manner of the Old Staffordshire China.
