Saucer

China Compote. The interior of the bowl features an image of the "Thomas Viaduct, 1835," as indicated by a banner along it's bottom. The focal point of the image is the viaduct. Buildings are visible beyond. In the foreground, train tracks cut through the woods, approaching the viaduct. Encircling this central image is a floral and leaf band with a wave motif on its inner edge, and a sawtooth one on its exterior. The ring of the bowl is decorated with a procession of images detailing the history of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. First is an outward facing panel of a pedestal inscribed with "First Stone of the Balt. & Ohio Railroad." Below a banner readers "laid July 4, 1828." Continuing clockwise are outward facing images of B & O locomotives and other forms for transportation, each identified by a banner. These are the "Horse Drawn Car 1830," "The 'Tom Thumb' 1830," "The 'Atlantic' 1832," "The 'Philip E. Thomas' 1838," "'Winan's Camel' 1851," "Mogul '600' 1875," and "Diesel Electric '51' 1937." On the underside of the bowl's ring is a larger version of the floral and leaf band with a wave border on its lower edge.

A maker's mark located underneath the base depicts a two-tiered, column-topped dome. The dome is flanked with the dates 1827 and 1927. Adjacent text reads, "Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Shenango, China, New Castle, PA."

This collection of blue and white china was used in the dining cars of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad during the 100th anniversary of the founding of the line. The china is styled in the manner of the Old Staffordshire China.
