Cup

China Double Egg Cup. Blue on white images of "The 'Philip E. Thomas' 1838," "Horse Drawn Car 1830," and "The 'Atlantic' 1832," each identified by a banner below surround the outside. An egg and dart pattern forms the upper boundary of the design, while a leaf and floral band defines the bottom. Separating each of the main images of modes of transportation are scrollwork-style ornamentation.

A maker's mark located on the base depicts a two-tiered, column-topped dome. The dome is flanked with the dates 1827 and 1927. Adjacent text reads, "Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Shenango, China, New Castle, PA."

This collection of blue and white china was used in the dining cars of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad during the 100th anniversary of the founding of the line. The china is styled in the manner of the Old Staffordshire China.
