Palm, Sailmaker's

Sail Palm. Iron thimble and leather palm; thimble composed of solid piece of metal with a faint stamp of an anchor and worn indentations on one side for acting as a thimble to push a heavy needle; thimble is enclosed by a thin oblong shell of metal with a very faint stamped image of an anchor and punched-out holes around edge for attaching to leather palm; leather palm consists of leather strap that wrapped around hand, has faint maker's stamp and holes where iron thimble was once sewn.

Recovered from wreck of the schooner ALVIN CLARK, which foundered in 1864.
