The Charles M. Freer House

Color lithograph, mounted on board, of a painting of the Charles Lang Freer House, now the Merrill-Palmer Institute by William A. Bostick. It is one of a series of twelve pieces entitled the "The Woods, Bricks, and Stones of Detroit, Vol. I." The piece is numbered 6/50 on the lower left and signed and dated "Wm A. Bostick 1975" on the lower right. The title, found in the center underneath the lithograph, reads "The Charles M. Freer House." The drawing shows the facade of the house from Ferry Street. Two people are sown walking down the front steps and snow covers the ground.

A label on the verso reads as follows:

"The Charles M. Freer House
71 East Ferry Avenue

Built in 1890 by Wilson Fyre of Philadelphia, the Charles M. Freer House on Ferry Avenue is an outstanding example of the shingle style. The interior of the house served as a background for Freer's collection of Oriental art now housed in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. Vice-President of the Peninsular Car Company, Freer was a friend and business associate of its President, Colonel Frank J. Hecker, who lived in the French chateau next door.

The Freer House is presently owned by the Merrill-Palmer Institute.

WHF."
