The Frank J. Hecker House
Color lithograph, mounted on board, of a painting of the Frank J. Hecker House by William A. Bostick. It is one of a series of twelve pieces entitled the "The Woods, Bricks, and Stones of Detroit, Vol. I." The piece is numbered 6/50 on the lower left and signed and dated "Wm A. Bostick 1974" on the lower right. The drawing shows the front of the house with a red car, a yellow car, and a blue car parked in the driveway. A man is shown entering the doorway of the house.
A label on the verso reads as follows:
"The Frank J. Hecker House
5510 Woodward Avenue
In 1890 Scott, Kamper and Scott built a residence on Woodward Avenue at Ferry Avenue for Colonel Frank J. Hecker, President of the Peninsular Car Company, manufacturers of railroad cars. Designer Louis Kamper had worked in the office of McKim, Mead and White, leading east-coast architects. Charles M. Freer, Vice-President of the Peninsular Car Company and noted art collector, lived next door to Colonel Hecker on Ferry Avenue and was a close friend.
The style of architecture is early French Renaissance, with many of the details derived from the chateau of Azay-le-Rideau in France. The house is now owned by the Smiley Brothers Piano Company.
