The Old City Hall

Color lithograph, mounted on board, of a painting of Old City Hall by William A. Bostick. It is one of a series of twelve pieces entitled the "The Woods, Bricks, and Stones of Detroit, Vol. I." The piece is numbered 3/50 on the lower left and reads "Wm. A. Bostick 1975 from 1961 Sketch" on the lower right. The painting shows the facade City Hall from Campus Martius with a view to the southwest. The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is shown at the front left, and the Dime Building is shown behind City Hall.

A label on the verso reads as follows:

"The Old City Hall
Lower Woodward Avenue

The Old City Hall, which ws completed in 1871, was the principal monument of the Victorian period in Detroit. Built of cream-colored limestone, it was designed by James Anderson in the florid French Second Empire style. Sculptor Julius Melchers carved statues of the early French explorers to go in the niches. The building was torn down in 1961 following the completion of the new City-County Building, and the site subsequently became known as Kennedy Square.
