The Hurlbut Memorial Gate, Waterworks Park

Color lithograph, mounted on board, of a painting of the Hurlbut Memorial Gate at Water Works Park by William A. Bostick. It is one of a series of twelve pieces entitled the "The Woods, Bricks, and Stones of Detroit, Vol. I." The piece is numbered 2/50 on the lower left and signed and dated "Wm A. Bostick 1975" on the lower right. The painting shows the gate from the southwest driveway of Water Works Park with a view to the northeast. Two people are standing in front of the gate.

A label on the verso reads as follows:

"The Hurlbut Memorial Gate, Waterworks Park
10100 East Jefferson Avenue

The Hurlbut Memorial Gate was erected in 1894 to serve as a formal entrance to Waterworks Park on East Jefferson Avenue. It was designed by Brede and Mueller in the florid neo-baroque style. Funding for the gate came from a bequest left for the beautification of the park by Chauncey Hurlbut, a member of the Board of Water Commissioners.
